What is Sky Vault?
At the core of Sky Vault’s symbolic purpose is unity. The landmark is for everyone in the East Midlands and this ethos will be translated to all parts of the project.
A physical presence
Sky Vault is a single structure consisting of a large cable net suspended on each side from steel arches. Its cable net symbolises the links between the different people and places that constitute the East Midlands - highlighting the value of the individual identities that make up the whole. Many cable net structures have been built in the world but Sky Vault will be the first large-scale example in the United Kingdom. Visit the frequent questions page for more information on the structure.
Five potential sites to host Sky Vault are being considered. A final Sky Vault design will be produced once a site has been chosen. It is envisaged that a footbridge will span Sky Vault, giving visitors access to the structure and connecting outdoor and indoor areas for relaxing and learning more about the project, the region and the people that live in it.
A net working for the East Midlands
A proposed virtual information network will help to put everyone in the East Midlands in touch with each other, and with the rest of the world. Accessible online and on-site, the network will be a business and services resource. And residents of the region will be able to digitally store their memories, thoughts and aspirations, painting a kaleidoscopic picture of life in the East Midlands; as it was, as it is and how it could be!
Inclusive
Since winning the Great East Midlands Landmark competition in November 2001, the Sky Vault project team has taken great strides towards making the concept a reality. A Steering Board and a team of specialist consultants are now in place. Sky Vault was voted for by the people and designed for the people of the region. And everyone will get the chance to have a hand in making it happen. Find out how you can help...
